Dora Agnes Metcalfe Remembered

Parents Emma Victoria Tracy & Clarence William Metcalf
Married Lester Floyd Bishop Nov 27 1908 McMaster Twp, OK

==How I remember my folks by Tracy Dee==

Mom's family came to OK around 1902 & settled in Lawton area. My folks were married in 1908. They farmed like most people did. There is a lot I don't know what happened in the early years, but I can remember when we left MO for OK. Gramma Bishop sent a lot of fried chicken to eat on the train.
Dad built a small house on Granddad Metcalf's place near Medicine Park. We moved in 1924 when Dad built a house near Ike Carter store. We lived there till the army bought our place in 1937. Dad moved us to our last house in 1938. Mother loved flowers but between the Bermuda grass and a shortage of water they didn't always do good.
I remember Milton got run over by a car & all my mother could do was hold him, because we didn't have any one to take us to the doctor. Mother's love was enough to heal his hurts. There is nothing like a Mother's love.
Mother contracted leukemia, she was in & out of the hospital for the rest of her life.
We were blessed to have parents like ours.

Talked To Gramma Bishop -UPDATE

I talked to my gramma Inez today. She said that she will answer any questions that I mail to her. So I guess I better get on it!

Also, she told me when she got married, oh man! I forgot to ask where! LOL! November 1st, 1941. I will update it Monday at work.

As I find out new info, I will update it in a separate post, but I will also update it in the post that the info pertains to...so, I guess, look for updates about updates!

Ancestory.Com

I am not having much luck on that site. It is free for the 1st through the 15th, but as far as I can tell, it is only the census records...I did get some stuff done on the big screen, I guess I could have done even when it wasnt free. Entering the things that I have found out so far, on an actual computer is nicer, I think, since I have most of the things saved here in my big computer, along with pictures that I can upload into the family ftree I am making.

I have pictures of some people on my Gramma Bishop (McCarty)'s side. They are the Parkers, so that would be...my Gramma Inez's grandmother, so, my great great grandmother, and her side. That is where, from what my Dad told me, we are related to Billy The Kid. But then again, who is NOT related to Billy The Kid, from what someone father along thier family line tells them!

Bottom line, and not to make excuses, but I have no new information to post today...

I worked on the cards a bit more, and this weekend, weather permitting, I plan to make the questionaire to send to my Gramma for her and my Aunt Robbie to go over, along with an envelope to return it all... It would be so cool to get that info from them. Maybe I will try to go for Spring Break again, so that I can do the video tape thing I mentioned. When my "aunt" Diane told the story of how they did it at her mother's house, it was really touching. Maybe I will ask my mom to take a packet to her Mother as well, when she goes to see her next week. I am pretty sure that Granny Bush has given me all she has, so that might be a dead end?

Anyhow, that is all for now.

==How I remember my folks by Tracy Dee==
First our folks loved us & provided us with our needs as best they could. They worked very hard against all odds. Dad made many moves to try & provide a better life for 6 boys & 2 girls. In the 20's Dad had farm, an egg and cream store. Dad lost his herd of milk cows to corn poison in just a few minutes, so he sold out & we went to MO, where Grampa & Gramma Bishop lived. After checking things out, Dad decided it'd be best for us to go back to OK.

The 30's were very hard but we survived. They built a home on a little acreage, growing a truck garden, raising chickens & always picking cotton. Dad also worked for a construction company building bridges for extra $. He was gone a lot of the times, but Mom kept us straight & busy. In 1936 they bought a farm outside of Lawton.

World War II came so Ray, Milton & Lewis joined the service. Bob volunteered for the Marines, but Dad needed him on the farm so Bob got deferred. At that time I was married w/2 kids, working for Santa Fe railroad. As Dad needed help I left my job & came to the farm. Things were scarce and you had to make do with what you had. Food, fuel, & supplies were rationed. I never heard them complain. Their main concern was that their kids get back from the Pacific War. Ray was on the battle ship California, when the Japanese sank it at Pearl Harbor. Lewis was delivering troops & supplies w/the Navy. Milton was in the Army Medical Corp.

Dad continued to farm and raise cattle until 1955. Mom was always a housewife. They were quiet, strong, solid Christians.
Dad died from an accident in the bathroom. He fell against the tub. We took him to the hospital in the A.M. & he died the same day.

Another Update

I started doing the family tree on flash cards this weekend... That way I can lay it out, and SEE who and how they are related to me...

Eventual goal, family tree painted on the wall. Or, on a GIANT canvas that gets hung on the wall. It might break my heart to have to paint over something that will take THAT MUCH WORK!

So, long and short of it is, no new entry today. Not sure about tomorrow either, turns out I have the info, but not as readily as I thought that it was...

Still have lots of updates that I need!!! Time to harass the family again!  It would be much nicer if I could go to see them, set up a camera to record conversations about these things. Get the real story, not just the information... That is why I love that find a grave website, there is a place to add personal stories about the person.

On a different note, I just did the spell check, and it showed NO TYPOS! It must no be working! LOL!
